WAVE Leadership Program : Walking the Talk, Awareness, Vision, Empowering Others
This customized leadership program is at the heart of North Coast Associates’ work. It combines skills training with self-awareness and reflection in a group/peer setting. It is our firm belief that long-lasting change and growth only occur when learning is spread out over time with a chance to practice and receive targeted feedback from peers and the facilitator.

Programs are offered within an organization or by combining groups across several organizations.


Sample Format:
1 full day and 7 or 11 half-day sessions over a three to six month period
Maximum group size of 16
Weekly or bi-weekly sessions held in Rochester, NY
Access to individual follow-up coaching sessions

To accommodate participants’ learning styles, a variety of teaching methods are incorporated into the program.

Session 1: Self-analysis

  • Develop increased insight into your leadership style
  • Clarify your personal goals for the program
  • Begin developing trust with other participants

Session 2: Listening for results

  • Learn to validate/acknowledge others’ experiences
  • Identify how and when to transition from listening to problem-solving
  • Understand the difference between reacting and responding to situations

Session 3: Goal-setting and Belief Examination, Part 1

  • Clarify your personal and professional values, ethics and objectives
  • Differentiate between personal and organizational values and culture
  •  Examine your beliefs and personal ingrained patterns that block goal attainment

Session 4: Prioritizing and Gaining Commitment

  • Define the key priorities in your personal and professional life
  • Identify ways to set limits and boundaries to achieve a balanced life
  • Learn how to better make requests and offers to create a healthy balance
  • Establish a method for making agreements and holding others accountable

Session 5: The Art of Giving and Receiving Feedback

  • Understand environmental nuances for giving feedback
  • Learn the three keys to a successful feedback message
  • Increase awareness of your defense mechanisms regarding the receipt of feedback

Session 6: Power, Influence and Leadership

  • Gain understanding of who has power and why they have it
  • Develop your own and others’ power
  • Explore the link between power and Emotional Intelligence (Goleman)

Session 7: Ethical Decision-making

  • Identify appropriate methods of decision-making based on situational criteria
  • Learn how to frame decisions from an ethical point of view
  • Link the decision-making process to goal attainment

Session 8: Leading Through Persuasion and Negotiation

  • Understand the leadership elements of persuading and enlisting others
  • Identify your negotiation style
  • Expand your repertoire of negotiation and conflict resolution

Session 9: Inclusion as a Leadership Advantage

  • Determine your diverse identities and their impact on your leadership style
  • Learn leadership skills to support inclusion of diverse perspectives
  • Become a better workplace ally and promote a multiplicity of views

Session 10: Coaching Others

  • Explore the benefits of coaching and delegation
  • Discover your obstacles to relinquishing control and allowing others to flourish
  • Apply foundational concepts in coaching others

Session 11: Sustainability

  • Review your major program gains
  • Identify and commit to a method of sustained post-program change
  • Learn to practice the art of closure as a leadership tool
